I find that I am really having fun writing this blog. It seems to be a little therapeutic for me to write things and feelings as they happen. I thank everyone that takes the time to read my little life blips and moments.

So today I learned that farming in the south is hard every year, I thought last year that maybe it was a freak hot year for me. As a kid I don’t have a memory of the summers being this hot, maybe it was easier due to being young and not having all if the responsibility that I do now.

I had to work my sheep this morning for things that I should know better than to let happen. I love going to the sale barn and buying the “affordable” stock and then I get excited to see my herd together so my biosecurity gets rushed when I think that everyone looks ok. This year I have tried to work on pasture rotation to minimize issues that are passed through running pastures too long or not making sure that animals are treated before rotation.

I have some stock that are battiling hoof scald/rot ( it is a problem that I deal with a lot due to the climate and humidity here in Louisiana). I have also noticed a couple of my sheep with cloudy eyes so I decided that today I would pen and treat, so I fed and managed to pen most of the herd to deal with. It was 8 am so I thought that I would have enough time to get things done before the heat set in, but boy oh boy.

Catching and treating ten sheep can get pretty adventurous especially when they don’t want to be messed with. Some of the sheep I treated today have never been handled by me and I’m not sure that some of them have EVER been handled. The heat makes things so much harder and it makes me want to move somewhere that the climate is more forgiving throughout day so that chores don’t have to be done at sun up or sundown. It makes things complicated to fit into such a small amount of time when bedtime is at 8pm.

I treated the animals that needed to be treated and I hope to grab the rebels that were having no part of my shenanigans today so that I can rotate to better pastures soon.

The cloudiness seems to be pinkeye which I have a treatment plan for.

I am hoping to work with my rabbits soon but the heat may change plans because I may have to bring some rabbits in for the extreme heat in the next few days. Show season is a head and I need to make the showstring lists and to plan my breedings for the fall litters.

I am also planning to update my website since I cannot work outside as much so stay tuned for that lol.

I learn more with every season that comes and goes, each hardship is a lesson learned for the next season.

Keep on keeping’ on…

Be blessed and happy homesteading
